Jean Kilbourne and Friends Celebrate 40 Years of “Killing Us Softly”

On Thursday, September 19, Northampton Mayor David Narkewicz declared Advertising’s Image of Women Awareness Day, marking the 40th anniversary of feminist and media critic Jean Kilbourne’s groundbreaking documentary “Killing Us Softly.”

Northampton Joins Together to Fight Climate Change

On Friday, Sept. 20, various organizations local to Western Massachusetts hosted public events as part of a larger global movement to fight climate change. These events were largely inspired by the work of climate activist Greta Thunberg. Groups including Extinction Rebellion Western Mass., Sunrise Northampton, and Climate Action Now helped organize a march and rally at Northampton City Hall, as well as a Solidarity Strike at Pulaski Park, a Solidarity Vigil in Springfield, a dance benefit at the First Churches in Northampton, and several other events.

And The Kids has certainly been busy since their 2016 release of “Friends Share Lovers.” The band — consisting of Hannah Mohan on vocals and guitar, Rebecca Lasaponaro on drums and Megan Miller on synthesizers and percussion — opened for Blondie at MASS MoCA and have made appearances in the Paste Magazine studio and NPR’s “Tiny Desk” concert series. Now, the Northampton group is back with their third LP, “When This Life Is Over,” in which they continue to explore the complexity of human connection.

Northampton council passes resolutions in regard to added surveillance downtown

Last Thursday, Northampton council passed a series of resolutions dealing with a variety of issues. 

The resolutions, although not legally-binding, express the council’s views. Yet, these resolutions  can also lead to legislature that will enact the ideas of these resolutions. Added surveillance cameras downtown, medical aid in dying, nuclear weapons and school bus safety were all topics of discussion for the council.

Josh Ritter along with his bandmates, the Royal City Band, performed at Calvin Theater in downtown Northampton on last Saturday. This performance was the second stop on his U.S. and European tour to promote his new album “Gathering.” 

New surveillance cameras proposed in downtown Northampton cause unease

A proposal from the Northampton Police Department for new cameras downtown created a stir amongst Northampton residents, as well as Smith students, earlier this month. Despite opposition from the community and questioning of the motives for such a proposal, Police Chief Jody Kasper of Northampton Police Department has defended the new surveillance. 

Interview with emerging alternative-pop band Secret Weapons

Alternative-pop duo Secret Weapons brought their fall tour to Northampton at Pearl Street on Sept. 16. This tour follows the release of their recent album “As the Setting Sun Comes Crashing Down on Me.” Before their Northampton performance, The Sophian had the opportunity to conduct a brief interview with the band in regards to their first solo tour and recent album.
