Climate justice and migration panel hosted by Divest Smith

Divest Smith hosted a panel discussion titled “Climate Justice and Migration” last Friday afternoon in the Campus Center, led by Gabriella Della Croce ’11 and Andrea Schmid ’17 from the Pioneer Valley Workers Center and Professor Rick Lopez from Amherst College. Friends greeted each other as more chairs were pulled out to seat a full audience from both the Five College and greater Northampton communities. Conversation centered on the enormous effects of climate change on marginalized groups.

Hampshire College decision reached: no regular decision applicants to be admitted

The Hampshire College Board of Trustees announced Friday, Feb. 1, their decision not to admit a full freshman class for the coming 2019-2020 academic year amidst tensions on campus. The decision came after the announcement Jan. 15 of enormous economic challenges the college faced, causing concern in the Hampshire community.

College reaffirms commitment to initiatives in inclusivity, diversity and equity

Prompted by the incident July 31, the College announced new Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Initiatives Jan. 30. College Relations reports: “The college has taken action in policing policies and training, employee training and cross-campus education focused on culture change.”

Jandon Center Welcomes New Americorps VISTA Xie Xianxiu AC ’18

The Smith College Jandon Center for Community Engagement recently welcomed Xie Xianxiu AC ’18, a new Americorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). Xie will be working closely with the Jandon Center, Holyoke STEM Academy and community organizations on assisting and connecting with mentoring programs and organizations that support first-generation students and underrepresented groups in STEM.

SACSA sponsors Project Kesho at Annual Fall Charity Dinner

On Fri., Nov. 16, students, faculty staff and community members gathered in the Carroll Room for Smith’s African & Caribbean Students’ Association (SACSA) Annual Charity Dinner. This fall, SACSA ran a fundraising campaign to help Project Kesho,a Ugandan- and Tanzanian-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing and improving access to educational opportunities for children in these countries.

Smith has made many commitments to support sustainability and address climate change, including one to become a carbon neutral campus by 2030. Part of Smith’s goal is to educate women so they can become leaders in improving sustainability and tackling climate change.
