A big plastic box, a clothing rack on wheels, a heap of bags filled with clothes — Smith’s free bins come in many shapes and sizes. As the name suggests, each “bin” is a repository of discarded clothes and objects that are free for students to take. From sweaters to mugs to artwork, the free bins — located in every house — are a great way for students to expand their wardrobes and decorate their rooms without breaking their wallets.

Over the last several years, students may have noticed a difference in the Smith landscape – each November, the tranquil body of water known as Paradise Pond transformed into a barren mudplain. Smith has dredged the pond periodically for decades. But outside of the Landscape and Environmental Studies departments, few members of the Smith community actually know why this happens, or why it is a significant event on the campus.
In an Oct. 18 email to the Smith Community, President Kathleen McCartney announced that the Smith College Board of Trustees voted in its October meeting to “direct Investure, the college’s outsourced endowment management firm, to exclude from the Smith College endowment all future investments with fossil fuel-specific managers” and also voted to enact a “phaseout of all current investments with fossil fuel-specific managers in the Smith College endowment.”
