Prompted by the incident July 31, the College announced new Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Initiatives Jan. 30. College Relations reports: “The college has taken action in policing policies and training, employee training and cross-campus education focused on culture change.”
On Thursday, November 30, 2017, President McCartney announced to the Smith community the appointment of the new Vice President for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity: David T. Campbell Bradley. Carreon Bradley previously worked at Vassar College as the chair of the Committee of Inclusion and Equity and as an associate professor in the physics department. The appointment will be effective January 18th 2018.
Last month, English department lecturer Patrick Donnelly stepped away from teaching Reading Contemporary Poetry after an incident in which he said a racial epithet present in a poem. The administration responded to the incident in the poetry class by replacing the instructor and offering students additional help finding alternative courses.
Last year President McCartney introduced the Innovation Challenge for Advancing Inclusion, Diversity and Equity. It was a new funding opportunity to support ventures which strengthen the Smith community. The Diverse Smithies Series was the proposed project of the Office of Alumnae Relations and started last week.
