Editorial: Change, Diversity and Sustainability

In case you haven’t noticed, The Sophian is changing. A lot.

We’re printing monthly now, with a new size and style, and we publish articles most days on our website, thesophian.com. This not only helps us be more environmentally and financially sustainable, but also allows our journalism to be the best it can be, as it gives our writers more time to shape their articles.

Smith is changing a lot, too. Recently, the school released a “living document” of initiatives related to inclusion and equity. In this issue, Features Editor Claudia Olson ’22, who was on the planning committee for “Inclusion in Action” reacts to Smith’s new inclusion initiatives. Hers is one of a series of articles we’ll be publishing this year that takes a look at diversity and inclusion initiatives at Smith and their efficacy.

Another series will be on sustainability at Smith. As the college embarks on its Year on Climate Change, we’ll be asking what it can do better and what members of the community are doing already. To start us out, Arts Editor Emily Ehrensperger ’21 examines the SCMA’s contribution to Smith’s year on climate change. As Smith and The Sophian both change, we want to hear from you. Send in letters to the editor to cleswell@smith.edu. They can be about anything — from your thoughts about your classes to your opinions on our coverage of certain topics. Until then, we hope you enjoy this second issue of a new and improved Sophian.
