Point of Order

Nikki Schuldt ‘22 is the president of the Smith Debate Society, which she called the “most active student organization on campus.” A member since her first year, Schuldt’s love of debate radiated from her as she talked in the basement of the Campus Center. She said she realized she was so excited to do this interview because no one ever wants to talk about the Debate Society with her, when there’s so much to talk about. “I would love it if somebody bragged about us,” she said.

Taylor Swift released “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” (“TV”) April 9, a re-recording of her 2008 album “Fearless.” The release is the first in a series of planned re-recordings of Swift’s first six albums. This follows a highly publicized battle over the ownerships of the albums, which were acquired by talent manager Scooter Braun as part of an acquisition with Big Machine Records, Swift’s former label.

On Feb. 1, 2021, police body camera footage surfaced online of a nine-year-old Black girl being dragged through snow to a police car, handcuffed, and pepper sprayed. The officers responding to a report of “family trouble” acted in this aggressive manner after the girl expressed that she wanted to kill herself and her mother. While the girl refused to sit inside the police car and said that she wanted her father, an officer dismissively told her that she’s “acting like a child,” to which the nine-year-old replied, “I am a child”–– then they pepper sprayed her.

Just Married?

I may not be the best person to write about marriage. The thought of being officially committed to someone for the rest of my life makes me want to crawl out of my skin and I don’t think I’ll ever get married. Not because I’ve never been in love (although I haven’t), but because the institution of marriage horrifies me.
