Friday, Oct. 25th to Sunday, Oct. 27th is Family Weekend, meaning that students’ loved ones will flock to Smith’s campus. In addition to simply reuniting, students can expect to give their guests a taste of Smith life. Family members are invited to enjoy refreshments at Friday Tea and Sunday Brunch, tour Smith amenities like the Botanic Garden and the libraries and even attend class alongside their students.
Smith is also prepared to show off its numerous artistic endeavors. For many students, this will mean the opportunity to demonstrate their artistic progress at Smith to their families. Student actors, musicians, and singers will be able to share their craft with their guests as well as the larger Smith community.
A number of live performance events will take place in the Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts. The Smith Improv Komedy Organization (SIKOS) will hold their first official shows of 2019, Friday, Oct. 25th at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 26th at 3:00 p.m. in the Green Room (T114). “Jumbo Shrimp: New Student Theater Lab,” a performance created by First Years and new transfer students, will be performed at 3:00 PM on both Saturday and Sunday in Acting Studio 1 (T100). No tickets are necessary for either of these events. Lastly, Smith’s theater department will open their production of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” in Theater 14. There will be performances at 7:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, and the show will continue running until Nov. 2nd. Admission is free for Smith students, $5 for non-Smith students and seniors, and $10 for adults. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Mendenhall box office or online at www.smith.edu/smithart.
There will also be opportunities to hear Smith’s musical groups perform. On Saturday from 4:00 pm. to 7:00 p.m. the Department of Music will present the Montage Dance Party at John M. Green Hall. This event will feature performances by Smith’s Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and various singing groups. Tickets can be purchased at the door ($5 for students, $10 for non-students) or online at montage2019.brownpapertickets.com ($3 for students, $8 for non-students). On Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the Sage Chamber Music Society Performance will take place in Sweeney Concert Hall in Sage Hall. The concert will feature music played by both students and faculty. Admission to this event is free.
In addition to these performances, admission will be free at the Smith College Museum of Art all weekend long. Visitors attending at select times can join guided tours of the Museum’s exhibits. At 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Floyd Cheung, Vice President for Equity and Inclusion and Smith Professor, and Aprile Gallant, Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs, will lead a tour of the Museum’s exhibit on artist Munio Makuuchi. At 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Yao Wu, the Jane Chace Carroll Curator of Asian Art, will lead a tour of the Museum’s Buddhism exhibit.
Finally, be sure not to miss the Asian Culture Show, which will be held in Sweeney Concert Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Organized by the Asian Students’ Association and Korean Students’ Association, the show will feature performances by Smith and Five College student groups. No tickets are necessary.
