As the fall season comes to a rapid close, the Pioneers are competing in their final matches, races and regattas. Last Saturday at the Hines Rowing Center, the crew team won their first race in the Seven Sisters Championship for the first time since 2005. Their time for the 4k was 17.28, four seconds faster than second place Wellesley. Bryn Mawr hosted the Championship this year on Schuylkill River. Overall, the Pioneers finished fourth with 22 points total.
Cross-country raced in the NEWMAC Championship held Sunday at Franklin Park. Danielle Opatovsky ’16 earned All-Conference honors for the second year in a row. She was the seventh runner to finish out of 154 competing, with a time of 18:47.54. Kylee Drugan-Eppich ’14 finished 31st with a time of 19:49.27 and Micaela Young ’14 followed her closely, finishing 35th with a time of 19:51.44. Cynthia Masai ’16finished with a time of 20:00.30, Victoria Dunch ’14 at 20:06.52, Katie Paulson-Smith ’14 at 20:31, Abby Mosca ’14 at 20:50.25, Becca Colfer ’17 at 20:56.48, Sarah Sutto-Plunz ’17 at 21:09.63, Katie Dempsey ’15 at 21:26.32, Sophie Dilek ’17 at 21:46.46 and Charlotte Dzialo ’16 at 21:47.88. The Pioneers finished in fifth place with 126 points. They will continue on to the NCAA New England Regional Championship on Nov. 16 at the University of Southern Maine.
Field hockey lost their final match in the NEWMAC quarterfinal against MIT on November 5. MIT triumphed over the Pioneers 3-1. Smith ends their season with a conference record of 11-8. They are still capable of gaining a bid to the ECAC New England tournament.
Volleyball also fell in the NEWMAC quarterfinal against MIT. They entered the tournament seeded fifth, but sadly lost 3-0. Smith has an overall record of 21–8, and a conference record of 6–5. The Pioneers will wait to see if they gain a bid into the ECAC New England tournament as well.
Equestrian competed last Saturday at the Amherst College Show, held at Biscuit Hill Farm. The Pioneers won 29 ribbons and placed third overall. Zoe Spieler ’15 was named the Champion High Point Intermediate Rider of the Day. They will finish their season on Nov. 16 at Mount Holyoke.
Soccer had a disappointing fall to Wheaton on Saturday, losing 1–0. The loss eliminated them from the NEWMAC playoffs. The season ended with a 5–10–2 overall record and 3–6–1 conference record. Smith will have 17 of the 20 players returning for the following season.
Tennis ended its season with a 1–7 overall record after falling to MIT in their final NEWMAC match on October 12. Smith received the League Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row.
