Track & Field
The track and field team started out their season on home turf. On Dec. 5, Smith competed against 13 teams in the Smith College Winter Classic. Zoe Rubinstein ’19 scored second (3.34m/10-11.50) out of 19 other students in the pole vault competition. She also placed 13th out of 47 in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8 minutes 42 seconds. Katie Hitchcock-Smith ’18 placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.59). Kim Du ’18 also placed in the 60-meter hurdles, coming in 10th with a time of 10:35. Besides the outstanding individual effort, Smith’s “A” team finished third in the 4×200 meter relay (1:53.15). Smith’s “B” team was not far behind, placing fifth with a time of 1:54.60.
Swimming & Diving
The swimming and diving team made an impressive finish at the Hamilton Invitational, ending in fifth place with a total of 498 points, only one point behind fourth place team, SUNY Oneonta. Some standout performances came from the diving team, with three Smith athletes placing in the top five for the three-meter dive. Elyse Stone ’18 topped out in second place, scoring 271.05, and Cece Arrison ’16 (259.55) and Anna Partridge ’16 (238.35) took third and fourth place. The swimming team also found success in the 200-free relay, placing eighth out of 23 teams. Claire Dudek ’16, Desi Stoyanovich ’19 and Abby Onos ’17 all contributed in this outstanding performance with a combined time of 1:50.01. The Smith Pioneers continued to make the leaderboards in the 1650-free, when Desi Stoyanovich ’19 placed third in the 1650-free with a time of 18.45.82. Stoyanovich also finished fifth in the 400 IM (4:58.49), followed by her teammates Laura Nunnelly ’16, who placed seventh (5:20.96) and Abby Bergman ’18 placing eighth (5:21.60).
Basketball
The Pioneers lost to Babson 81-56 but not without a good fight. Kennedy Guest-Prichet ’19 scored 24 points in the game and recorded a career high with 15 rebounds. Lauren Bondi ’19 also recorded nine points and five assists, as did Samantha Alakai ’18, who scored seven points and four rebounds. Going into the second quarter, the Pioneers were winning 14-12 thanks to a three-pointer by Tia Karapoulios ’16 and a layup by Guest-Pritchett. The Pioneers held an eight-point lead in the beginning of the second quarter and continued to stay in the lead until the very end of the quarter, leaving Babson on top, winning 36-31. In the third quarter, Smith was still fighting, with two free throws from Guest-Pritchett and two from Samantha Alakai ’18. But Babson continued to outscore Smith and ended the game with a 25-point lead.
