Smith basketball heads out of January and into the final stretch of their season riding a five-game winning streak. The team carried an 8-2 record over J-Term and swept the NEWMAC competition with a 7-1 J-Term record. The Pioneers head into their next conference games third in the standings, with an overall conference record of 8-3. On Dec. 30, the team won a hard fought battle against the College of New Jersey. TCNJ held the lead for the majority of the game and gained a nine-point lead with only seven minutes remaining in regulation time. Smith hadn’t given up, scoring nine consecutive points and taking the lead with five minutes left. Smith ended the game on top 72-67.

For the past month, I have been living and working in Madrid, Spain as an au pair. I live with a family of four in a small city about 30 minutes outside of downtown Madrid and serve as an English tutor and friend for the two 11- and 12-year-old girls.
In 1934, Julia Child graduated from Smith with a bachelor’s degree in history. This season, the UMass men’s hockey team has taken UMass athletics and the college hockey world by storm with their phenomenal opening half of the season. As of Mon., Dec. 10, their record stands at an impressive 13-2, and they’re ranked second behind St. Cloud State in Minnesota. Their record looks even more impressive when you consider the mixed results that the team earned last season; they finished with a record of 17-20-2. So what changed this season to make the team more successful?
