Taping Things Up: How Smith is Overcoming the Athletic Trainer Shortage

Over 250 student-athletes are part of Smith Athletics' 11 varsity sports teams. Any injury, rehabilitation process, practice and game coverage or mental support needed for these athletes are directed towards the Athletic Training (AT) Department. The department is run by Deb Coutu and Kelli Steele, the only AT’s on staff this year after the loss of the graduate assistant position due to a 2015 policy change by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA). 

Smith Crew in Review: On Hard Work, Accessibility and Unity

For the past few years, the Smith College Crew team has consistently been ranking in the top ten Division III teams in the country, but this season has been one to remember. Three Smith athletes, out of a total of 18 athletes nationally, were recognized by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) as “rowers to watch”: Megan Holm ’24, Linnea Schultz ’24 and Sofia Trotta ’25.

Smith Cross Country Jumps through the Ranks Following Second Place Dickinson Invitational Performance

The Smith Cross Country team recently placed second out of 19 teams at the Dickinson Invitational on Sept. 23, beating two nationally ranked teams: No. 28 Carnegie Mellon University and No. 35 Dickinson College.  This brought the Smith team up from a 10th-place regional ranking to now ranking sixth in the competitive Mid-East Region.
