The Diverse Smithies series kicks off

Last year President McCartney introduced the Innovation Challenge for Advancing Inclusion, Diversity and Equity. It was a new funding opportunity to support ventures which strengthen the Smith community. The Diverse Smithies Series was the proposed project of the Office of Alumnae Relations and started last week. 

Smith responds to Title IX changes from Dept. of Education

In an all-campus email last Friday, Provost and Dean of the Faculty and Interim Vice President for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Katherine Rowe formally assured the Smith community that “Smith College continues to take its obligations under Title IX very seriously. We remain firmly committed to our Gender-Based and Sexual Misconduct Policy … [F]or now, that policy remains in effect and unchanged.” 

Bored? Here’s what’s happening on campus!

Happy fall! It’s that wonderful time of year where the leaves change color, cozy sweaters are perfect for a breezy day, and the friend-making process is in full swing. Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out where to go or what to do in order to meet these new friends, or activities you can do with your newly found besties. Or, maybe while the lovely fall breeze is blowing through, it makes you want to learn something new. Luckily, there are many events on campus that happen each week and are open for drop-ins. 

Smith forays into tech updates

As Smithies wrapped up spring semester earlier this year, they knew they would come back to a changed campus in the fall due to Neilson construction. We knew Neilson would be inaccessible for a while, and we were, naturally, concerned by the potential lack of study spaces that may arise. 

President McCartney issues response to Trump’s decision to end DACA

President McCartney issued a response after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on September 5 the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy on behalf of the Trump administration. DACA is a policy implemented in 2012 under President Obama that allows some undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children to pursue education and employment opportunities. 

Smith celebrates the start of a new academic year at convocation

Students and faculty members at Smith celebrated the start of the new academic year at convocation on the evening of September 6. Classes began on Thursday, September 7.

   The celebratory, student-focused college tradition first introduced by the college’s first female president Jill Ker Conway in 1975 now features house-themed costumes, house chants and minimal clothing.
