Smith celebrated the first Black alumna, Otelia Cromwell, with its annual Cromwell Day on Nov. 4. Following the theme of “Collective Imagining of Anti-Racist Democracies: Fighting for Racial Justice,” a part of Smith’s “Year on Democracies” event series, speaker LaTosha Brown, a noted voting rights activist, gave the keynote address.

NORTHAMPTON -- Beneath a waving Confederate flag and MAGA banner, twenty white people shouted proudly on the corner of Elm and Prospect. Across the street, Smith students wrapped in pride flags kissed each other. A projected image declared, “Speaker Pelosi, Fight for our future!” on the Campus Center. Scattered police officers, campus safety patrollers, and Secret Service agents watched blankly.
After two days of the in-person International Student Pre-Orientation (ISP) program, the program transitioned to an online platform following a positive COVID-19 test from a student.
Smith College Dining Services made changes in the dining system for the Fall 2021 semester, both as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and to the general needs of students.
The Northampton Policing Review Commission (NPRC), created by the Northampton Mayor and City Council, released its recommendations for reforming “the current organizational and oversight structures, municipal funding allocations, and policies and ordinances” of the Northampton policing system. The creation of a “new Department of Community Care” should be a top priority according to the NPRC.
