Cushing/Emerson Dining Closure Brings Mixed Reactions to Campus

Smith College announced the closing of Cushing/Emerson dining hall on April 25, 2024, effective in the 2024-25 academic year, which has led to dissatisfaction and complaints among students and staff. The decision resulted from a routine assessment in Dining Services that primarily focused on evaluating student dining experiences and usage levels.

Smith College Celebrates Cromwell Day

Smith celebrated the first Black alumna, Otelia Cromwell, with its annual Cromwell Day on Nov. 4. Following the theme of “Collective Imagining of Anti-Racist Democracies: Fighting for Racial Justice,” a part of Smith’s “Year on Democracies” event series, speaker LaTosha Brown, a noted voting rights activist, gave the keynote address.

Three Protests Gathered Around John M. Greene Hall During Colloquium

NORTHAMPTON -- Beneath a waving Confederate flag and MAGA banner, twenty white people shouted proudly on the corner of Elm and Prospect. Across the street, Smith students wrapped in pride flags kissed each other. A projected image declared, “Speaker Pelosi, Fight for our future!” on the Campus Center. Scattered police officers, campus safety patrollers, and Secret Service agents watched blankly.
