The Power of Community: On Smith Basketball’s Historic Season

On Mar. 16, 2024, the Smith women’s basketball team completed their final game of the season at the NCAA Division III National Tournament in Columbus, Ohio. Although New York University (NYU) defeated Smith 51-41, their journey to the national championship game was still a victory for the program. 

Smith Basketball Ranked First in NEWMAC 2023-2024 Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll

The New England Women and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) 2023-2024 Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released on Oct. 19, ranked Smith Basketball first out of the twelve teams in the conference. Smith received the votes of every team except two, resulting in ten first place votes. 

Basketball freezes the competition over J-Term

Smith basketball heads out of January and into the final stretch of their season riding a five-game winning streak. The team carried an 8-2 record over J-Term and swept the NEWMAC competition with a 7-1 J-Term record. The Pioneers head into their next conference games third in the standings, with an overall conference record of 8-3. On Dec. 30, the team won a hard fought battle against the College of New Jersey. TCNJ held the lead for the majority of the game and gained a nine-point lead with only seven minutes remaining in regulation time. Smith hadn’t given up, scoring nine consecutive points and taking the lead with five minutes left. Smith ended the game on top 72-67.

Basketball blazes past the competition in season openers

Smith basketball has had a killer start to their season with a 4-1 record so far. The team is full of seasoned athletes, with seven seniors and 10 total returners out of 13 players. This experience should continue to give the team a competitive edge in their season.
