Track and Field
The track and field team competed at the Gordon Kelly Invitational on Feb. 13. Amina Kahn ’19 had a standout performance, setting a personal best in shot put (7.19). Raegan Thomas ’19 finished ninth out of 36 in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.25 seconds, and Celine Ganiere ’18 placed third overall in the 1000-meter dash with a time of 3:40.43. Meadeshia Mitchell ’16 got a new season best in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:44.94. Other great performances came from first years Amelia Stapleton ’19 and Molly Day ’19, who came in fourth (1:02.79) and fifth (1:03.6) place in the 400-meter dash.
Swimming and Diving
The swimming and diving team celebrated their Senior Day on Feb. 6 with a home meet against Mount Holyoke. Smith lost the meet 157-142 and dropped to a 4-4 season record. Cece Arrison ’16 broke an 11-year-old school record on the one-meter board with a score of 300.1 – the previous record was 292.20, set in 2005. She also took first place on the three-meter with a score of 296.45. The Smith team did well with two other first place triumphs from Claire Dudek ’16 in the 1000-meter freestyle and Desi Stoyanova ’19 in the 200-yard freestyle. Other strong finishes came from Hannah Francis ’16, who placed second in the 100-yard breast and 200-yard breast. The 400-yard relay team of Madeline Meadows-McDonnell ’18, Claire Dudek ’16 and Abby Onos ’17 also finished second. Even though the Pioneers suffered a close loss, the team came out with some impressive scores and times.
Basketball
The Smith basketball team earned a pivotal win against Emerson 56-49 on Feb. 13. The Pioneers now advance to 5-9 in the NEWMAC conference, while Emerson drops to 5-9. The game started out with a neck-and-neck first quarter, and ended with Emerson in the lead 12-10. The Pioneers fought back and ended the second quarter with a 28-23 lead thanks to two free throws made by Tia Karapoulios ’16. The tug-of-war continued throughout the third quarter, with the Pioneers and Lions fighting for an edge ahead. Kennedy Guest-Pritchett ’19 led the team in stats with 11 points and eight rebounds, followed by Karapoulios with 10 points and five rebounds. The game ended with a much-needed win for Smith. The Pioneers will continue their season in the NEWMAC tournament.
