Smith soccer played their annual senior day game on home turf against Wellesley College on Oct. 25. The team celebrated the two senior members, Jenna Bicierro and Olivia Ruiz, before they both started in the game. Bicierro is team captain and midfielder and Ruiz covers the defensive line.
Wellesley players were able to take 12 shots at the goal throughout the game, but goalkeeper Shelby Hall ’18 blocked each one. Hall earned her fifth shoutout of the season and earned the title of NEWMAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the third time.
Though the defensive game ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie, each team played aggressively, hoping to boost their record. Wellesley nearly scored at the 38.11 minute of the second half, with the shot bouncing off the goal post.
Forward Jackie Foody ’17 attempted to score in the last two minutes of the game but was shut out by Wellesley’s Kat Goldsmith ’16.
Following the game, Bicierro said, “This game, just like all double overtime games, was very tiring both physically and mentally. I’m just really proud that we stepped up our game during these overtime periods.”
Ruiz added, “We defended well, but we could have been more cohesive in our attacking plays.”
Both seniors agreed that playing in their senior game was “surreal.”
“Specifically, I will miss playing at away games because the left side is where the bench is and I can hear everyone cheering. I will also miss improving as a part of a team,” Ruiz said.
Bicierro commented on the team’s recent success this season, stating: “I think our team chemistry plays a really big part in our success this season. On the field, it shows that we play for each other.” She continued, “We never hesitate to take the extra sprint, make the tackle or support our teammates. Off the field, we’re just as close. Most of our best friends are on the team.”
On Oct. 28 the Pioneers have made it to the NEWMAC conference e for the first time in several years with their 2-0 win against Mount Holyoke College.
Smith’s record is currently 6-6-3 in conference play. They will play next at Wheaton College on Nov. 1 at 2 p.m.
