On Mar. 24, 2018, thousands will gather at Boston Common in solidarity to stand up for the rights of students to learn without the fear of violence. Smith alumnae invite current Smith students to join them as they walk together.
Co-Organizer Brandy King ’01 was behind the group of 150 Smithies who showed up for the 2017 Women’s March.
“It was incredibly empowering to organize Smith alums to walk together during a time when physical presence was key to demonstrating the need for equality. We’ve got to keep showing up. This time, for the students, teachers and administrators who deserve to learn and work in an environment that’s free from threat of violence.”
King will replicate many of the strategies that were successful in organizing the Women’s March.
A Facebook event has been set up with daily posts that encourage people to stay passionate about this issue. Attendees will brainstorm sign ideas and arrange who brings Smith College banners. Smith students will gather on the steps of the Boston Public Library an hour before the March begins. Yellow sashes will be distributed to help keep the group together throughout the day.
“Now that I know what worked to help us make a strong statement last year we can easily replicate those ideas and apply them to this march,” said King.
“Everyone coming together under one common goal is an amazing experience,” said Amanda Coen ’10, co-organizer. “We hope students will join us and see how powerful the Smith network really is!”
