Smith Continues to Excel in End of the Season Competition

Swimming & Diving

The swimming and diving team competed in the four-day NEWMAC championships from Feb. 18 to Feb. 21. The team shattered personal and lifetime best times in a myriad of events. Desi Stoyanova ’19 broke the school record set in 1988 for the 400 IM on day three with a time of 4:38.78. Other personal bests came from Hannah Francis ’16 with a time of 1:10.04 in the 100 breast, Madeleine Meadows-McDonnell ’18 with a time of 29.67 split in backstroke and Meredith Millman ’16 (56.42) and Sophie Shapiro ’16 (1:06.28) in the 100 free. Abby Onos ’17, Meadows-McDonnell and Laura Nunnelly ’16 all made lifetime best times in the 200 back. Aliza Cummings ’17 and Chloe Harris ’19 both finished the 1,000 with lifetime best times, 19:32.78 and 20:43.66 respectively. Many other swimmers broke personal, season and lifetime records as well.

Basketball

The Smith Basketball team honored Tia Karapoulios ’16 and Shannon Saywell ’16 at their impressive senior game win against Clark University 74-66. After Saturday’s win, the Pioneers ranked seventh in the NEWMAC conference, with a 7-9 record in conference play and an 11-14 record overall. Kennedy Guest-Pritchett ’19 led the team with 22 points, 15 rebounds and three steals. Other important contributions came from Paige Marquez ’18, with 15 points and five assists, Samantha Alakai ’18 with nine points and three rebounds, and Jade Chihara ’17 with seven points, two assists and two rebounds. In the first quarter, Clark started off with a 14-8 point lead that was quickly defeated by the Pioneers in the second quarter. Alakai led the second quarter with nine points, contributing to the final second quarter score of 24-22. Smith continued to get ahead, ending the third quarter 51-33. In the final quarter, Clark trailed Smith by no closer than eight points and eventually fell to the Pioneers’s resilient play, ending the game with a win for Smith, 72-60. The Pioneers are now on a season-high four game winning streak.

Track & Field

The track and field team competed in the NCAA DIII New England Championships this past weekend. Zoe Rubinstein ’18 earned All-New England honors – given to the top eight placers in each event – by tying for eighth place in the pole vault (10-06.00). Rubinstein and Meadeshia Mitchell ’16, 500m runner, will compete at Boston University next weekend in the Open New England meet, where athletes from all three NCAA divisions compete against one another. The Pioneers’s A 4×200 relay team of Amelia Stapleton ’19, Raegan Thomas ’19 and Aliece Goodman ’19 placed 12th, with a time of 1:49.35. The Smith A 4×400 relay team, of Stapleton, Meghan Suslovic ’18, Mitchell and Molly Day ’19 finished with a time of 4:23.20.
