In the last few weeks, Smith athletes have been dominating on the court, track and field. As the fall regular season comes to an end, three of our very own Smithies have set personal records. Rosa Drummond ’14, Bethany Ashworth ’14 and Allie Stein ’14 have all shone during their senior seasons. Whether on the court or the field, these three women have worked hard the last four years to achieve these great accomplishments. All three are also captains, proving that their heart is in it for themselves as well as each member of their team.
Drummond, a co-captain of the volleyball team, lives in Rye, New Hampshire. This Pioneer was able to reach her 1,000th kill in the Seven Sisters tournament a little over a week ago. As the season continues on, Drummond has a chance to break the record of all-time kills. Drummond and the rest of the Smith College volleyball team have had quite the successful season, beating Babson for the first time in many years.
Ashworth, the other captain of the volleyball team, has also had a very successful senior season. Ashworth, who is from North Falmouth, Massachusetts, has reached her 1,000th dig in a game against Salve Regina. She is also less than 150 assists away from 1,000. After a possible season-ending injury at practice, Ashworth has powered through the pain to make a speedy recovery just in time to assist Drummond to her 1,000th kill. Ashworth is determined to stay healthy and push the limits of the team and herself to make it into the postseason.
Stein, a co-captain of Smith’s field hockey team, has set numerous records this season. As of this season, she is the leading scorer in field hockey across division one, two, and three. Stein, who lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is now also the leading scorer in Smith College history. She also holds the record of all-time assists and most assists in a single season. With still a few games left in the regular season, Stein has many more opportunities to keep rewriting the record book.
As the fall season comes to a close, the Pioneers are proving their hard work over the last few months. Hopes of post-season championships are high as these seniors and many others fight to extend their last career season. With a few weeks left, the possibilities are endless.
