Pioneers March Into Season

Equestrian

The Smith Equestrian team earned a grand total of 23 ribbons, with 16 of these ribbons from the top four, at the Mount Holyoke Horse Show on March 5. Experienced and novice riders alike dominated the Walk, Trot Canter Division with Deirdre Sullivan ’19 winning the first section and Elisbeth Pendleton Wheeler ’19 placing second in the other section. Kaila Temple ’18 preceded to the Advanced Walk, Trot, Canter Division by winning the Beginner Walk, Trot Canter class. The Pioneers also excelled in Novice Equitation on the Flat Division, with Katie Knowles’ 19 winning first place and Sophia Giattina ’19 and Savannah Pees ’19 finishing second in their respective sections. Overall, the team placed fifth among nine collegiate teams competing at the show. They will continue their season at the UMass Amherst Show on March 26.

Lacrosse

The lacrosse team opened its spring season with two games this week. The team played well in its first game of the season on March 2 against UMass Dartmouth: Caroline Myran ’18 and Bayleigh Bogan ’19 added three and two goals respectively. Goalkeeper Meredith Britton ’18 turned aside eleven shots and Katie Christensen ’19 caused four turnovers and scooped up seven ground balls on the defensive side. However, the Pioneers were ultimately defeated 8-15 as UMass Dartmouth Corsairs scored eight goals in the second half of the game. The Smith team continued to play valiantly in its second game of the season on March 5 against Western New England University, with Bogan scoring at 4:44 into the game to place Smith ahead at 1-0. With a four goal streak from WNE in the second half, Pioneers ultimately ended with a loss of 8-14 to the WNE Golden Bears. The lacrosse team will strive for their first win of the season on March 10 against Simmons.

Track & Field

A squad of four members of the track and field team competed on March 4 and 5 at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Indoor Track and Fields Championship. The four-member team, comprised of Zoe Rubinstein ’18, Amelia Stapleton ’19, Aliece Goodman ’19, and Raegan Thomas ’19, shattered previous times of the current season by running a 1:48.07 and placing 13th. Rubinstein also shattered a personal record for the pole vault, achieving an 11 foot 10-inch jump to place fifth and earn All-Conference honors. The team will commence its outdoor season against Tufts on March 26.
