This season, the UMass men’s hockey team has taken UMass athletics and the college hockey world by storm with their phenomenal opening half of the season. As of Mon., Dec. 10, their record stands at an impressive 13-2, and they’re ranked second behind St. Cloud State in Minnesota. Their record looks even more impressive when you consider the mixed results that the team earned last season; they finished with a record of 17-20-2. So what changed this season to make the team more successful?

For students, this requirement will take effect Jan. 31, 2019; for faculty and staff, it will take effect March 13, though everyone may enroll now.

The first article I ever wrote for The Sophian was titled: “Five things I learned in my first week at Smith.” While I admit it’s a bit ironic to publish an article giving advice about college life after only a week of experiencing it, in that moment in time, I felt as though I had grown up so much so quickly.

I have lived in Washington, D.C. for seven months now. During that time, I marched with current and soon-to-be feminist icons, explored the city with new friends, said good morning to my role model each day and witnessed history being made right outside my door. It’s been both a dream come true and a reality I always knew was waiting for me.
Founded in 2011, PRISM is a student-led organization that seeks to create a community and safe space for queer, trans and questioning students of color. PRISM’s stated goal is to “enlighten the Smith community about issues concerning queer students of color by creating a positive presence on campus and providing educational activities open to the general Smith community.” However, the limited funding the organization receives makes it difficult to do as much as the organization hopes to.
How do I begin to understand thee? Let me count the ways…
It’s the most “wonderful” time of the year. By “wonderful,” of course, I mean “stressful” because stress can make you do wondrous things. Yes, course registration season is upon us. There is one wondrous thing you can do, though, to reduce your stress. That wondrous thing is organization -- specifically, making a plan for that crazy morning. Most of you are already signed up, but you can always prepare for next semester. If you’re graduating, congratulations! Organization is still useful out there.
There seems to be something about the “bury the gays” trope that screenwriters just can’t get enough of. You can find it in everything, from Degrassi to NCIS to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If you find a non-straight or non-cisgender character you like, chances are that they’ll be killed off, kicked out of their home to never be seen again or otherwise conveniently erased from the main storyline. Are LGBTQIA+ folks in the media always doomed to a bleak future, or can room be made for more positive endings?
