ValleyBike Share coming to Pioneer Valley in 2018

Northampton is soon to be one of five municipalities to place rent-a-bike stations throughout the region through the ValleyBike Share, a project started by the Pioneer Planning Commission. There will be 28 stations placed in high-traffic areas throughout Amherst, Mount Holyoke, South Hadley and Springfield. 

Trump sides with Democrats

At a recent White House meeting, with congressional leaders from both parties, President Donald Trump dumbfounded fellow Republicans by suddenly aligning himself with Democrats on a series of key fiscal issues. Trump’s surprise stance upended sensitive negotiations over the debt ceiling and further weakened his already fragile relationship with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan.

“The Scarlet Professor” remembers Smith’s past

The Five College Opera performed “The Scarlet Professor” last Saturday. The opera tells the true story of renowned Smith English professor and literary critic Newton Arvin, who was “arrested and disgraced for possessing gay magazines and materials,” the opera’s website said. The opera premiered at the Mendenhall Center for the Arts at Smith. 

Smith responds to Department of Justice’s affirmative action probe

Smith told The Sophian the college remains dedicated to its affirmative action policies amidst the Department of Justice’s plan to investigate and sue universities over such admission policies which allegedly discriminate against white students.

If one walks through the mustard, Smith College-aesthetic walls of Graham Hall within Brown Fine Arts Center, one will stumble upon Hillyer Art Library, where the restrooms and cubicles even feel like artistic installations. The lobby of Brown Fine Arts Center, home of Smith College’s Department of Art, communicates an artisanal atmosphere with its muted carpets and just the right amount of gray. 

A Smiffenpoof perspective on Arch Sing

Each fall, Smith’s a capella scene is kicked off by Arch Sing. Traditionally held under the Neilson Library Arch, 2017 was the first ever Arch Sing in the Quadrangle. Last Sunday at 8 p.m., all six of Smith’s a capella groups gathered between Cushing and Morrow to sing for the assembled crowd of several hundred students.
