On Monday, Oct. 9, Boston geared up for two afternoon games, a high stakes baseball game and a start-of-the-season hockey game.

After the Smith field hockey team’s win against its Pioneer Valley rival Mount Holyoke this past weekend, the team is 8-8 for the season. Smith field hockey team has played six of the national top 15 teams and their schedule ranks among some of the toughest in the nation. Led by a core of upperclassmen, they returned 10 out of 11 starters and have seen significant contributions from returners and first-year players.
Earlier this month, student protesters prevented the President of the University of Oregon from delivering his “State of the University” speech. The group responded to criticism of their actions by saying that free speech is the right of individuals to express themselves without repression. They argued that taking the stage and using it as a platform to air their grievances was an act of free speech, not a violation of it.
On a particularly memorable Tuesday evening in early November of 2016, Hillary Rodham Clinton (HRC) had just settled into her hotel room at the Peninsula Hotel in New York City to watch the results of the 2016 presidential election. She was surrounded by her family and her senior staffers, and at this point, all she could do was wait.
On Oct. 21, the Jill Ker Conway Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center sponsored a small group of Smith students, in which I had the privilege of being a part of, to attend the eighth Annual Igniting Innovation Summit on Social Entrepreneurship at Harvard University last weekend. The conference took up most of the morning, running into late afternoon and aimed to bring student entrepreneurs’ attention to notable entrepreneurs in various fields.
Last week, Senators Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) announced that they had reached a bipartisan deal that would allot government funding to health care subsidies covered by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that were cut by President Trump last week.
Last week in Springfield, 18 Hampshire County residents were arrested at the Department of Homeland Security’s regional office while protesting the deportation of an undocumented resident of the county. The demonstrators were reportedly blocking the front entrance and restricting access to the building. Amongst the 150 people gathered were residents from Amherst, Northampton and Hadley.
Earlier this month, Attorney General Jeff Sessions reversed a federal policy that had protected transgender people from discrimination in the workplace. This policy, put into place by the Obama administration three years ago, was under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
In a campus-wide email sent Monday, President Kathleen McCartney and Board of Trustees Chair Deborah Duncan ’77 that the college will adopt four strategic recommendations to divest the endowment of fossil fuels. The decision came at the Saturday meeting of the Board of Trustees.
With a collision of contemporary and medieval imaginations, The Smith College Department of Theatre presented Heidi Schreck’s play “Creature,” from Oct. 20-21. This production was directed by Isabelle Brown ‘19. From lighting design to set design to costume design, the entire cast and crew was student-led.
