Beginning on November 8th, WOZQ will be celebrating Radio Awareness week. Every semester, the radio station hosts various fun, music-related events to showcase WOZQ’s role in the Smith community and invite Smithies to get involved. This semester’s Radio Awareness Week (RAW) will end on November 15th.
Last semester, WOZQ started online streaming, making listening to 91.9 fm accessible to everyone, regardless of whether or not students own a radio. WOZQ has four different departments: Specialties, Revolutions, General, and News. Although many DJs focus on a specific genre of music, the weekly shows are geared to give new perspectives on the theme and allow the listener to listen to something unexpected. Not all shows feature music, and some hosts use their hour time slot to dive into various nonmusical topics of interest. The Radio Awareness Week events aim to help Smithies learn more about WOZQ while having fun and expressing themselves.
To start Radio Awareness Week off, WOZQ will host Open Mike Night in the Campus Center TV Lounge. On Monday November 11th, students can stop by Campus Center 102 from 3 to 5 pm for some DIY temporary tattoos and make-your-own patches.
For students eager to see what the WOZQ booth is like there will be a WOZQ booth open house Tuesday, November 12th from noon until 3 pm. An activity meant to be a play on words – playing jams versus making jams – there will be a station set up where students can stop by and make homemade jam from 3 to 4:30 pm on Wednesday, November 13th.
Every semester, WOZQ makes a “Zine” and they want Smithies to “channel their inner riot grrrls” to help create this semester’s issue. There will be a workshop so Smithies can contribute from 3-4 pm on Thursday, November 14th.
On Friday, November 15th, Radio Awareness Week will wrap up by spotlighting this semester’s Party DJs. Each of this semester’s five Party DJs will play a 30-minute set, showcasing their unique styles and collections. Students are welcome to come hang out, craft, and enjoy the music from 7-10 pm.
This event schedule is subject to change, so keep a look out for the addition of other events, including a possible music-editing workshop, a radio archives exploration session, a music documentary screening and more.
WOZQ’s goal is to use Radio Awareness week to show all members of the Smith community that radio is an important and dynamic part of Smith and they hope the week will “let the campus know in a big way about the awesome and totally unique ways that Smithies want to express themselves.”
