Rosa Drummond ’14 became the 10th player in Smith history to score 1,000 points as the Pioneers defeated Clark University Wednesday night. With the 71-56 victory, Smith reached 20 wins for the second consecutive year.
Smith led 8-7 on sophomore Lauren Weston’s layup with 14:52 remaining in the first half. The Pioneers went on a 12-0 run led by a three point shot by Devon Quattrochi ’13 and capped by two free throws from Sydney Parkmond ’14. With 27 seconds to go, Paulina Solis ’15 connected on a layup to put Smith up 31-21 at halftime.
The Pioneers lead increased to as many as 17, but Clark pulled within five after a 23-8 run brought the score to 51-46. A layup from Amanda Zakoske ’13 and a three pointer from Quattrocchi gave Smith the lead for good. Drummond’s historic free throw at 4:27 brought the lead to 64-49 and five straight points from Solis increased the deficit to 69-52. Solis led Smith with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Quattrocchi contributed 14 points and Parkmond added 10.
With Drummond’s eight points she joined the ranks of Christina Hobson ’99, Phoebe Jacob ’93, Tammy Drummond ’84, Jennifer Ramsey ’92, Lauren Kernochan ’00, Berit Schelde ’10, Ann Miller ’96, Marcella Zalot ’87 and Dasen Woitkowski ’01 on the Pioneers’ all-time scoring list. Drummond became just the second player to reach the 1,000 point mark in her junior year.
“I have been very fortunate to be part of a wonderful program in Smith [basketball],” Drummond said. “It would have been impossible without the tremendous hard work and dedication of my teammates and coaches over the past three years.”
Wednesday’s game marked another milestone, Head Coach Lynn Hersey’s 100th career win. Hersey has achieved 88 wins at Smith for a career record of 100-75.
