Floating upwards in Instagram feeds and maybe even in the real, tangible world somewhere, there exists something called the mirror cake. It’s named after the smooth shine of its glaze which, to be considered successful, must be spotless — it must be perfect without any trace of effort. This effortless beauty catches the eye at first, but after watching anything that could be considered an imperfection get sanded down to an uncanny valley smoothness, the mind craves some deviating irregularity.

Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh has denied Dr. Christine Ford’s sexual assault allegations since she first brought them before the Senate. However, while many in the general population agree that his outright denial is shameful at best, Kavanaugh’s emotional reaction to Christine Blasey Ford’s claims have been the most surprising to the public. This is believed to risk his chances of becoming the next and highest Judge in the US council.

Last Tuesday, I went to Mount Holyoke College to see John Kerry talk about his new memoir, Every Day is Extra. The Obama administration’s Secretary of State and 2004 democratic presidential candidate spoke less about his career and more about his coming of age.
Self-reported feelings of loneliness and difficulty connecting with others seem to be endemic to college campuses over the past couple of years — presumably a combined result of increased usage of social media over recent years and living in Trump’s America. However, the data suggests that these feelings of isolation and emotional malaise are overwhelmingly more prevalent at campuses that more-so favor anonymity, such as day colleges and larger state schools.
