Bad days for Boston sports

On Monday, Oct. 9, Boston geared up for two afternoon games, a high stakes baseball game and a start-of-the-season hockey game. 

Smith field hockey wins big victory over Mount Holyoke

After the Smith field hockey team’s win against its Pioneer Valley rival Mount Holyoke this past weekend, the team is 8-8 for the season. Smith field hockey team has played six of the national top 15 teams and their schedule ranks among some of the toughest in the nation. Led by a core of upperclassmen, they returned 10 out of 11 starters and have seen significant contributions from returners and first-year players. 

Why do female athletes get more concussions?

According to the National Institutes of Health, a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is any type of brain injury that leads to temporary or permanent brain impairment. 

The most commonly diagnosed type of TBI is a concussion, which can be caused by any sort of blow to the head, either during athletics or daily life. The Brain Injury Research Institute approximates that around 1.6 to 3.8 million concussions are diagnosed each year as a result of sports. Although concussions have been studied in detail in the past, biological differences between the way concussions present in males and females are only just beginning to come to light.

Autumn returns to Smith College. Our favorite feature of the season: fall sports. Smith student-athletes have been on campus and sweating through preseason since August. 

Clare Doyle hopes to make a splash as new head rowing coach

This summer Smith College announced that Clare Doyle M.S., ’17 will be the new head coach of the rowing team for the upcoming 2017-2018 season. Doyle follows the footsteps of former head rowing coach Karen Klinger ’84, who retired after 20 years of coaching the Pioneers.
