Athletic Year in Review

Over the past fall, winter and spring, the Smith College Pioneers have had some great accomplishments. Many of these highlights are due in large part to the team’s seniors who will be graduating this Sunday, May 18.

The fall teams consisted of cross-country, field hockey, soccer and volleyball. One of cross country’s seniors, Abby Mosca shared the 2014 Pokora Senior Scholar Athlete Award, which recognizes the senior student-athlete with the highest GPA. In addition, the cross country team earned its sixth GPA award. Other seniors, Kylee Drugan-Eppich, Victoria Dunch, Katie Paulson-Smith and Micaela Young helped lead the team to 3rd place at the Seven Sisters Championship as well as 13th place at the NCAA Regional meet.

During the field hockey season, the Pioneers were led by seniors Emma Camilleri, Meg Richardson, Allie Stein, Alexa DeJesus, Petru Bester and Abbey Petronzio. The team finished with an 11-9 record, advancing to the NEWMAC Tournament but was eliminated by MIT in the first round. The team also qualified for the ECAC Tournament, but lost in a thriller to Worcester State University. Senior Allie Stein was named to the ECAC Division III New England Second Team, NEWMAC All Conference First Team, National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-New England East First Team, NFHCA All-America Second Team, and was an NFHCA All-Star Game selection. Stein finished the season with 29 goals and 16 assists, and became Smith’s all- time leading scorer as well. Stein also holds the single-season and career records for assists, and the single-season record for points. Stein is the second all-time leader in goals.

The Smith Soccer team was led by seniors Katie Johnson, Aidan Hitt and Christine Chang. The Pioneers missed the NEWMAC Tournament by one point this season. Senior captains Katie Jonhson and Aidan Hitt anchored a defense that lost five games by only one goal, while fellow senior Christine Chang made contributions in the midfield. Katie Johnson was named to the 2013-2014 Marly Pineda Pioneer Team at this year’s athletic banquet.

The Smith Volleyball team had a great season, finishing at 23-9 and as runner-ups in the ECAC Championship game. The team was led by seniors Hannah Schiff, Sonia Brown, Bethany Ashworth, Rosa Drummond and Paige Sarlandt. Ashworth finished the season with 803 assists. Drummond and Sarlandt were selected for the New England Women’s Volleyball Association Senior Classic. Drummond finished her volleyball career amongst the all-time Smith leaders in several statistical categories. She was 2nd all-time in kills, 2nd with attack percentage, 4th with attack attempts and 4th with solo blocks just to name a few. Sarlandt led the 2013 team with an attack percentage of .342 and is eighth all-time in solo blocks and tenth all-time in total blocks.

Moving on to the winter sports – basketball, squash, and swimming and diving. The basketball team finished with an 18-12 season, finishing as runner ups in both the NEWMAC Tournament and the ECAC Tournament. The team was led by seniors Rosa Drummond, Marissa Munoz-Ruiz and Sydney Parkmond. Drummond was placed on the ECAC Division III New England Second Team, was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team in addition to the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) All-Region Second Team and a NEWBA All-Star Classic selection, as well as a D3hoops.com All- Northeast third teamer. Drummond finished the season as the program leading scorer with 1,482 points. Parkmond finished the season with 26.8 minutes per game, 10.2 points per game, and 7.1 rebounds per game. Munoz-Ruiz had 25.6 minutes per game, 4.5 points per game, and 1.7 assists per game.

Smith’s squash team will graduate four seniors – Laura Chesney, Roseanne Hui, Vivian Lee, and Xinyi Liu. The team ended the season with a victory over Rochester on the final day of the Howe Cup and senior Vivian Lee went 3-0, while Roseanne Hui won in three games.

The swimming and diving team was led by seniors Gillian Anderson, Olivia Bannon, Hayley Bezubka and Kiara Gomez. The team finished 4-3 overall and was named a 2013 Fall College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Team. Olivia Bannon placed seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke at the NEWMAC Championship.

The spring sports included crew, equestrian, lacrosse, softball, tennis and track and field. The crew team was led by seniors Riana Hull, Praatika Prasad, Winter Schwaid-Linder, and Helen Smith. Three of these four seniors were members of the Varsity Eight boat. The team finished ninth at the New England Rowing Championships.

The equestrian team will graduate Michelle Hannon, Lauren Hilton, Anne Hunter, Willa Neal, Elizabeth Reed Harris, Catherine Ruggiero and Jillian Zoglio. Lauren Hilton was a Pokora Senior Scholar Athlete Award winner this year. Anne Hunter finished third in the region in Novie Equitation on the Flat. Elizabeth Reed Harris earned a fifth-place ribbon in the Walk-Trot at the Zone 1, Region 3 Championship Show.

Smith’s lacrosse team was led by three seniors – Merric Kallfez, Adrienne Horne and Kate Detrick. Detrick finished the season with nine goals and one assist. Horne played and started 12 games for the Pioneers and contributed to the attack position. Goalkeeper Merric Kallfez finished the season with 168 saves and 960:00 minutes played.

This year’s softball team does not have any seniors. However, their season proved to be very successful as well. They finished the season with a 23-13 record, while being named champions of the ECAC tournament.

The tennis team graduates only one senior – Jinan Martiuk. Martiuk led the team to a 3-18 season.

The Track and Field team was led by Sonia Brown, Kayla Clark, Kylee Drugan-Eppich, Fiona Jones, Abby Mosca, Katie Paulson-Smith, Mary Reilly, Maya Rittmanic, Paige Sarlandt and Micaela Young who brought the team to the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Open New England Championship. Kylee Drugan-Eppich finished 19th in the 10,000 meter run, Maya Rittmanic was 20th in the long jump, and the 4×100-meter relay team consisting of seniors Rittmanic and Sonia Brown, placed 22nd.
