A weekend of wins for Smith’s spring athletics

Track and Field

The Pioneers finished ninth in the Springfield College Classic on Saturday. Zoe Rubinstein ’18 jumped a personal best (3.66m) and placed second in pole vault. More personal bests came from Sarah Felderman ’18 running 26.80 in the 200m, placing sixth and Katrina Kuo ’18 running 1:02.96 in the 400m placing 16th. The 4×400 A team of Amelia Stapleton ’19, Kuo, and Molly Day ’19 finished the relay with a season best time of 4:13.83. Among many personal bests were personal firsts. For the first time this season, Rubinstein ran the 100m with a time of 13.37 and placed eighth. Katy McClellan ’19 threw 37.02m in the javelin event, placing second while Kimberly Du ’18 threw a personal best of 28.76m. Smith track and field will continue their season at the NEWMAC Championships on April 30, 2016.

Crew

The Smith Crew Team fought hard on April 23 at the 2016 NEWMAC Championship and finished fourth overall. In the varsity eight boat, Pooja Somasundaram ’16, Nomfuneko Mafunda ’17, Julianne Eppley ’19, Olivia Shaw ’17, Marianna Mapes ’16, Lisa Guido ’18, Piper Hayden ’16, Gracie Hackenberg ’18 and coxswain Jessica Wert ’18, finished sixth with a time of 7:00.64. In the second varsity eight boat, Tziona Breitbart ‘16, Sarah Evans ‘18, Michaela Gill ‘16, Heather Kurtz ’16, Kelandra Hurd ’18, Sally Cattar ’18, Abigail Michelson ’16, Casey Armanetti ’18 and coxswain Mariam Seldin-Stein ’16, finished fourth with a time of 7:11.80. In the third varsity boat, Su Wei Heng ’18, Hanne Gaukel ’19, Autumn Mineo ’19, Elsie Eastman ’17, Maddy Gallay ’19, Natalie Norberg ’19, Denicia Peterson ’17, Katherine Denney ’17 and coxswain Koko Tetsuka ’17 finished second with a time of 7:09.83. In the novice eight boat of all first-years, Veronica Morales, Haleigh Anderson, Gaea Ridenhour, Karli Hakala, Christine Johnson, Vivian Hulsey, Brynn Sibley and coxswain Kennedy Barber-Fraser finished fourth with a time of 8:16.01. Smith’s outstanding athletes, Olivia Shaw ’17 and Gracie Hackenberg ’18 earned All-Conference second team honors. The next stop for the Pioneers crew team is the 2016 New England Rowing Championship on Saturday.

Lacrosse

The Smith lacrosse team earned their fifth win of the season beating Coast Guard 11-4. This was Smith’s first NEWMAC conference win. Some highlights include Katie Christensen ’19 scoring a hat trick (three goals) and Ray Silveria ’16 scoring two goals with one assist. Emily Biggs ’19 and Caroline Myran ’18 both registered two goals of their own. The Pioneers went into the second half with a 4-2 lead. Smith scored two quick goals in the second half followed by two goals from Coast Guard to make a 6-4 Pioneer lead with eighteen minutes left in game play. The Pioneers would score five more goals in the remaining minutes, holding Coast Guard goalless the rest of the game. Sarah Price ’18 stopped eight of the 12 shots she was faced with and is second in the conference with a save percentage of 50.4.

Softball

Smith softball sweeps two wins in a double header against Coast Guard on April 24. In the first game, Smith won 7-4 with Tori Brown ’16, Allison Snyder ’17 and Lydie DeAngelo ’19 all hitting home runs. Brown and DeAngelo’s homers put Smith in a 6-2 lead. Coast Guard got two runs back, only for Snyder to hit her homer, bringing Smith to a final lead of 7-4 after the sixth inning. Snyder’s home run tied the school record for number of homeruns in a season. Brittney Blokker ’17, Alyssa Pioggia ’19 and Natalie Burchat ’17 all recorded two hits each for Smith. Burchat at pitcher allowed ten hits, four earned runs and walked two people while striking out five.

In the second game Smith won 10-2 and Caroline Kushner ’16 hit her 100th career hit. Brown recorded another home run and four RBIs in the game. Coast Guard started with a 2-0 lead in the second inning before Kushner hit an RBI and Brown hit a two-run single to put the Pioneers ahead 3-2. Smith’s burst of runs came in the fifth inning when Smith hit home plate six times. Rowan Turner ’18 at pitcher allowed six hits and a pair of earned runs, while walking three people and striking out five.
