Inspired by “Humans of New York,” “Humans of Smith” is dedicated to sharing the stories of the Smith community.

“Life is good. Smith is an interesting place. I’m made a lot of friends; I don’t think I’ve met anybody that I don’t actually like, surprisingly. I was talking to my friend about it – I’ve been talking to my friends back home about it a lot and they were surprised too, ‘cause they didn’t think I was gonna do that. I’m actually closer to my friends at home now, when I’m away from them, than [when] I went to high school with them, if that makes sense. I talk to them more often, because I feel like I’m gonna lose them someday.

“My mom, she’s kinda sad, but she’s happy that we’re away. We’re from Georgia, this small little town called Dacula. It has 4,500 people in it. It’s nice. I would like to go see it again, but I’m happy being away.

“I have nieces and a nephew, and my sister’s pregnant again. I miss them; every time I see little kids I think of them. The oldest one just turned five, and they’re all a year apart. They’re so cute! I love their innocence. They’re back in Georgia, too; a lot of my family is in Georgia.

“In Georgia, nobody talks about half the things that’s talked about here, like politics. A lot of people here are more accepting of political discussion, and I like it. As a culture in Georgia, we just try to avoid conflict, so I like how here there’s more social uproar and we’re trying to make a difference more, and so I like it way better than in Georgia where you’re just trying to keep things going without problems.

“I’m a little concerned about my grades right now. I know that’s not the end of the world, but I’m still a little bit worried. And I’m worried about my mom, because she was really sad. And med school, of course. I’ve been talking to prehealth advisers. I really love the help that they give you here.”
