Happy fall! It’s that wonderful time of year where the leaves change color, cozy sweaters are perfect for a breezy day, and the friend-making process is in full swing. Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out where to go or what to do in order to meet these new friends, or activities you can do with your newly found besties. Or, maybe while the lovely fall breeze is blowing through, it makes you want to learn something new. Luckily, there are many events on campus that happen each week and are open for drop-ins.
Monday
Mindful Mondays, 12:15 p.m. (Campus Center 103) – Each Monday, the Wurtele Center for Work and Life hosts a lunch and learning discussion for students, to help them adjust in transitions, cope with stress and engage in conversation and exercises to have a healthy mindset.
Weekly Meditation, 5 p.m. (Chapel Sanctuary) – Feeling the need to decompress and reflect at the end of your Monday? Learn how to meditate using Zen practices with Professor Ruth Ozeki in this non-denominational, beginner-friendly practice.
Tuesday
Financing Life, 12 p.m. (Campus Center 108) – Professor Randy Barlett and the Conway Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center are holding a seven-week series to teach students how to, well, not be broke college students. Lunch is provided as you learn how to manage your finances and feel confident doing so.
Wednesday
Weekly Wellness Open Hours, 1 – 4 p.m. (Schacht Center, 2nd floor) Hump day! Head over to the open hours at the Schacht Center for some you time, coloring, board games and stress balls included. Want to amp up the chill time? Turn on your radio and listen to WOZQ 91.9, Smith’s student-run radio station. No appointment necessary.
Thursday
Jittery’s Live, 9 p.m. (Campus Center Lounge) – The Student Events Committee (SEC) throws a weekly coffeehouse featuring local or visiting performers, and sometimes Smithies. This low-key concert is the perfect way to hang out with friends, grab some snacks and enjoy the music.
Friday
Soup, Salad and Soul, 5 p.m. (Bodman Lounge, Chapel) – Enjoy a home-cooked meal to end your week and send you off to the weekend feeling full, both literally and figuratively. Everyone is invited to share the delicious meal and join in lively conversation about anything under the sun.
SEC Films, 7:30 p.m. (Weinstein Auditorium) – If you’re feeling like your laptop screen and Netflix aren’t doing it anymore, the SEC screens movies each weekend on both Friday and Saturday night. Selections can be the newest Disney animated movie or a documentary featuring individuals from around the world. In the warmer weather, the SEC has been known to hold their movie nights on Seelye lawn under the stars.
Saturday
Smith To Do, 7 p.m. (Alternating Locations) – Feeling crafty? Need more decorations to make your Smith crib reflective of you? The SEC provides materials and instructions to create a masterpiece each week, ranging from DIY whiteboard calendars to make your own terrarium. Check out the SEC website or Facebook page to see what craft is coming up and where it will be, either in the Campus Center or Davis Ballroom.
Sunday
Let’s be real, the only thing you are going to want to do on Sunday is make sure you did all that reading or pretend the weekend is going to last forever.
Of course, there are always more events, programs and performances happening on campus. Check out the Mendenhall Performing Arts Center bulletin board for dance and theater performances, and bulletin boards in the Campus Center for both Smith- and Northampton-based events around town.
