We’re midway through the Fall Season, and our teams have carved their places in their respective sports through hard work and dedication. Last weekend, four of our varsity teams competed and earned mixed results.
On Saturday, the crew team competed in the Hadley Chase, hosted by UMass Amherst, on the Connecticut River. Smith entered two boats in the Varsity 8 race. The first boat, with athletes Cali Nathanson ’20, Clara Slesar ’21, Julia Batson ’22, Linnea Schultz ’22, Lucy Jenson ’21, Chase Ryan-Embry ’22, Maddy Galley ’19, Laura Morrison ’20 and Eleanor Donaher ’20, finished with a time of 16:36.2. Their performance earned them 12th out of 25 teams. The other Smith boat in this race, with athletes Kennedy Barder-Fraser ’19, Anne Trainer ’22, Anna Freund ’20, Hannah Dziadzio ’19, Gabby Sciarrotta ’20, Rowena Balasubramani ’21, Rachel Clendenning ’22, Kate Bernhardt ’21 and Emilia Field ’22, finished at 17:18.7, which brought them to 17th place. Their next regatta, Head of the Charles in Boston, is this Sunday.
Field Hockey also played on Saturday in an away game against Babson; unfortunately, Smith lost 0-3. Babson is, however, one of our toughest adversaries. They’re ranked 11th, and their win this weekend extends their win-streak to five games and strengthens their overall record to 12-3. The pioneers are still doing well this season, with an overall record of 8-5 and 3-2 in their conference. They have away games coming up on the 18th and the 20th, but their next home game is on the 24th against Keene State. Grab your friends, and come out to support the team!
Soccer also played at Babson this weekend, and they managed to secure a win in a close 2-1 game, bringing their record up to 7-8. The first goal of the game was scored by Jessica Matsuoka ’21 at 25:09 and was assisted by Captain Reilly Sullivan ’20. Babson came back with a goal less than a minute later. The game stayed tied until early in the second half when Sullivan scored at 50:28 on a penalty kick. Their upcoming games include away games at Springfield College, Mount Holyoke and Clark. Hopefully, they can take advantage of the upcoming games to turn their almost-even record into a winning record.
The final varsity sports event of the weekend was cross country; the team participated in the Seven Sisters Championship and finished third out of six. They came in behind Vassar and Wellesley but ahead of Mount Holyoke, St. Catherine and Bryn Mawr. The first Smith student to finish the 6k was Karena Garcia ’21, who came in sixth out of 93 runners with a time of 23:28.5. Other notable Smith students were Frances Duncan ’20, Laurel Kruger ’22 and Haley Markos ’20, who finished 11th, 18th and 23rd respectively. Their next meet is the NEWMAC Championship on the 27th, which will be hosted here at Smith.
Even though New England is starting to cool down, it’s still important to come out and support the Smith teams. This Friday and Saturday, Volleyball takes on Bates and then Brandeis and Plymouth State. Hopefully, the following weeks bring more success as teams look towards the end of their season!
