The Smith College Lacrosse team fell to Western New England College on Saturday, March 9, with a final score of 16–5. The WNE Golden Bears outshot the Pioneers by a margin of 33–24. This gives the Pioneers a record of 0–2 for NEWMAC play.
Jenny Estes ’15 scored two goals for the Pioneers, one in each half of the game. At the beginning of the second half, the Pioneers were down 12–1. However, accompanying Estes, Jessica Lillquist ’15 also put back a goal for the Pioneers. Rachel Silveria ’16 opened the second half of the game with a goal and put another back before the end of the game. Silveria is the team’s midfielder, her duties including running up and down the field to play both offense and defense for the team.
As she reflected on Saturday’s game Silveria pinpointed both the strengths and weaknesses of the team: “I think we need to be more aggressive on defense and have more communication throughout the field. However, I think because we are such a small team, we work really hard for each other and we have really good connections on the field. We have a lot more confidence this season than last season, because I think there are more people who really want to commit to the team.”
Though the Pioneers fell again to Nichols College on Monday, March 10, Silveria has an optimistic outlook for the rest of the season: “I think we’re going to really improve overall. I think we are actually going to score goals and win games.”
Up next, the Pioneers will face Simmons College at home on Thursday, March 13.
