On May 12, Smith’s very own Allie Stein ’14 was featured as a contestant on the famous game show “The Price is Right.” Stein has been a long-time fan of the show; she began watching it in 2002, and actively scheduled all of her undergraduate courses and field hockey-related activities around the timeslot in which the show airs. Stein, along with fellow smithies Tia Karapoulios ’16, Mei-Li Smith ’16 and Emma Camilleri ’14, attended the taping of the show over their spring break trip on March 18. The group waited in line for five hours, after which the entire crowd, approximately 30 people, each had a 10-15 second interview, hoping to have their name called. Stein was the first participant announced to “come on down.” After incorrectly guessing on a trip and designer sunglasses, she guessed the closest on a car audio system, worth $2,319.00. This led Stein to her next potential prize – an SUV.
In order to win this coveted prize, Stein had to guess the price of the SUV by playing a game called “Stack the Deck.” She went 3-for-3 in the pricing game by matching a product with its price. By winning these three miniature games, she was able to determine three numbers in the price of the vehicle. Stein used those three numbers to take the final three digits of the price of the car. Stein was left with the first two digits of the price of the car and was left with four possible numbers – 0, 2, 3 and 8. She correctly guessed the first digit of 2, but Stein chose a 3 instead of a 0 for the second digit, and walked away without the car.
Though Stein was disappointed, she was extremely happy to have had the opportunity to be on the show, and was thrilled to spin the wheel. Stein was the first of three contestants to do so, and she landed on $0.70 on her first try – while giving a shout out to friends, family and Smith College. Unfortunately, Stein was bested by another contestant who spun a higher value of .75, and then moved on to the final round.
Following her appearance on “The Price is Right,” Stein was featured in Ann Arbor News and also on NCAA. com. She will be graduating from Smith on Sunday, May 18 with a degree in psychology.
