Never count out Smith softball. With a 6-23 record just a year ago, the team will be going to the New England Women’s and Men’s Conference Championship (NEWMAC) tournament for the first time since 2008. But its accomplishments do not stop there. On Monday, April 21, Smith won against its nationally ranked, cross-town opponent Amherst College for the first time since 2008.

On Saturday, April 19, the Pioneers faced NEWMAC opponent the Coast Guard Academy. The Pioneers were victorious in the first game of the double header by a 2-0 margin. This game was the first time that Smith has beaten Coast Guard since 2008. Gina Martucci ’16, who was just recently named NEWMAC pitcher of the week, threw a two-hitter while Tori Brown ’16 and Joanna Giordano ’16 had the two runs for the Pioneers. Brittney Blokker ’17 went 2-for-4 at the plate and Allison Snyder ’17 went 2-for-3.

Smith’s most recent game was on Monday, April 21 against Amherst. Again, Martucci ’16 threw a two-hitter and Tori Brown ’16 hit a 2-RBI double in the second inning en route to a 4-1 Smith victory. Joanna Giordano ’16 batted 2-for-3 and Ruth Zimmerman ’17 went 2-for-4. Both Giordano and Zimmerman scored one for the Pioneers.

The official NEWMAC pairings have yet to come out, but it looks like Smith will open the NEWMAC Softball Championship play on Friday at 2:30 p.m. against Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Wheaton College.
