Crew Rows to Second Place at Two Competition

This past Saturday, April 19, the Smith College crew team competed in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Rowing Championship as well as the Florence Jope Smith Cup in Worcester, Mass. The team tied for second in both competitions and the second varsity eight won their race. The second varsity eight finished with a time of 7:14.3, which was 2.6 seconds ahead of the title and cup winner Wellesley College. Smith’s varsity team came in fourth place with their best time so far this spring (7:08.67). The third varsity eight also finished fourth with a time of 8:10.8. The novice eight placed third with a time of 7:59.59.

Members of the varsity eight include Praatika Prasad ’14, Piper Hayden ’16, Emma Carlisle-Reske ’15, Missy Kubik ’15, Liz Sukhinenko ’15, Caroline Bishop ’16, Helen Smith ’14, Riana Hull ’14, and Theresa Meyer ’17. Carlisle-Reske and Kubik were named to the 2014 NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team at the end of the regatta ceremony.

Hayden ’16 said, “I am very proud of our team and our performance at the regatta. For the varsity eight, it was our best time this spring. We have worked hard and have come a long way to improve this much since the beginning of the semester. I am looking forward to our regatta next weekend.”

The team will travel to Tufts University on Saturday, April 26, to compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference regatta.
