There is no doubt that Smith lacrosse had one of their hardest seasons this spring. It was tough — many hard games with little forgiveness and a few defeats. In the past two weeks, however, the lacrosse team pushed hard and finished strong.
On April 18, the lacrosse team had its annual senior day, a game that honors all the seniors on the team. They earned a big win against the Coast Guard Academy, leading 16-10. This game wasn’t a small victory — this was the team’s first conference win since 2012. The team honored seniors Jennifer Estes, Petru Bester, Simone Lawrence, Jessica Lillquist and Angela Schondek. Lillquist led the way by scoring six goals. Junior Rachel Silveria scored four, and Estes scored two. First-year goalkeeper Sarah Price also had a great game, keeping 12 shots out of the net.
On April 22, the lacrosse team played its final game of the season. The Pioneers faced a big rival: the Mount Holyoke Lyons. The Lyons won, 15-6, but it wasn’t an easy fight. The first half was exciting, especially when Lawrence scored her final career goal. Although it was a loss, the team still celebrated their efforts.
The Smith lacrosse team had a strong finish, especially with a win against the Coast Guard Academy. The end of any sports season is bittersweet, especially when there are five phenomenal seniors leaving, but the Smith lacrosse players all value the time they spent as a team.
