Swimming and Diving
The swimming and diving team finished in fourth place at the Seven Sisters 2016 Swimming & Diving Championship on Jan. 24. Sixteen out of twenty individuals recorded season best times. Madeleine Meadows-McDonnell ’18 got multiple best times in 50 free, 500 free and 200 back, while Leah VanHoeve ’16 got her best time in 50 free, as well. More personal records were set when Chloe Harris ’19 finished the 1650 free with a time of 21:26.16. Desi Stoyanova ’19 made the leaderboards with a fourth place finish in the 200 fly and fifth place in the 1650 free. The diving team also finished with great accomplishments, rounding out with three divers scoring in the top five. Cece Arrison ’16 took third, Elly Stone ’18 took fourth and Anna Partridge ‘16 took fifth.
Basketball
On Jan. 30, the Smith basketball team fought hard for the whole game and an overtime against Wheaton College but lost 83-74. Lauren Bondi ’19 played an amazing game, scoring a career high of 23 points. Other impressive performances came from Page Marquez ’18, who scored 12 points and 9 rebounds, Erin Hanley ’19 with 14 points and Tia Karapoulios ’16 with 14 points. From the start of the game, the Pioneers and the Lyons were in a neck-to-neck battle. The first quarter ended with Smith in the lead, 18-17. The tug of war continued into the second quarter, which ended tied at 32-32. In the fourth quarter, Tia Karapoulios ’16 came out fired up, scoring two back-to-back three-pointers. This put Smith ahead in the game, 52-50. The fourth quarter ended in a 63-63 tie. In overtime, the Lyons advanced, scoring four points quickly then finished the overtime going 10 for 10 in free throws, ending the game with a loss for Smith.
Track and Field
The track and field team placed sixth in the Beynon Invitational on Jan. 23. Zoe Rubinstein ’18 led the team in some amazing finishes, placing first in the pole vault competition and seventh in the 200 (27.73). She crossed the finish line for 4×200 relay team at 1:49.89. She is also ranked in the top eight for New England Division III and top 15 for NCAA Division III. The Smith College 4×400 relay team and the distance medley team both clocked in with third place finishes. Raegan Thomas ’19, finished third in the 200 meter dash (28.83) and seventh in the 60 meter dash (8.42), followed by Amelia Stapleton ’19, who finished seventh in the 400 meter dash (1:02.73). The track and field team finished ahead of American International, Wheelock, Emmanuel, Eastern Connecticut, Lasell, Mount Holyoke and Colby-Sawyer. On Jan. 30, Smith placed fourth overall in the Southern Maine invitational.
