The Sophian is Smith College’s oldest-running independent, student-led newspaper. We publish multiple times a week online and monthly in print, aiming to reflect the concerns of the Smith, Five College and local communities. The Sophian also occasionally publishes national news stories at the discretion of the Editorial Board. The Sophian operates as a student organization chartered by the Student Government Association, through which we receive funding. Our organization promotes inclusivity and non-discrimination, fostering a welcoming environment for all students.
The Sophian is owned and operated by its Editorial Board. The Editor-in-Chief and Managers assume the final responsibility for its contents and business transactions. The opinions expressed are those of the editorial staff, if signed, and contributors, which do not necessarily reflect those of the faculty, administration or trustees of Smith College.
All students who publish with The Sophian are protected by freedom of expression, a Constitutional right that Smith College pledges to uphold:
“Allied to the concept of academic freedom, Smith College endorses freedom of thought and expression in accordance with the laws and Constitution of the United States. In the College, as in society as a whole, freedom of speech and expression is not absolute: speech that is libelous, slanderous, incites to riot or is unlawfully harassing is not protected. In addition, speech directed at persons with intent to cause substantial injury is not protected by academic freedom. Further, in accordance with applicable law and Smith College values, members of the Smith community are expected to maintain an environment that ensures equal opportunity to pursue learning for all its members.”
