Never count out the Pioneers. Smith’s basketball team, who at one point early in the season had a record of  2-7, boasted a huge win against the United States Coast Guard Academy this past Saturday afternoon, while also celebrating their senior day. The Pioneers have come very far since the beginning of their season, and with Saturday’s win, are now tied for first place in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). The last home game of their regular season proved to be a particularly exciting one. The Pioneers, who trailed by 11 points at one point in the game, scored 17 points in the last five minutes of the game to defeat Coast Guard by a slim margin, 59-57. Alyssa Barrett ‘15 and Marissa Munoz-Ruiz ‘14 together scored 10 of those final 17 points for the Pioneers. Barrett finished the game with 10 total points. Munoz-Ruiz also finished with 10 points for the Pioneers and was one of the three seniors being honored on Saturday.

Classmates Rosa Drummond and Sydney Parkmond will also be graduating in the spring. Parkmond scored ten points for the Pioneers, including a big time three-pointer that began the final rally for the Pioneers. “It was a great game, it was so nice to see so many fans come out and support for our team on senior night” stated Parkmond. In addition to the celebration of senior day, Rosa Drummond’s first half three-pointer scored her 1,401st career point, which earns her second place all time in points scored. Drummond scored a total of 12 points on Saturday.

With this win, the Pioneers advance to a 14-10 overall record and 14-5 in the NEWMAC. The team finishes their regular season next Saturday at Emerson who is currently 4-14 in NEWMAC play.
