The start of the school year introduces us to new classes, professors, people, challenges and perspectives. Regardless of the changes around and within us, the routine of Smith College life remains the same: the fearful excitement of “Welcome to Smith!”; the unpredictable energy of Convocation – will there be a protest? Will there not be a protest? Let’s wait and see; the punched-in-the stomach feeling as you sit down to read your syllabi the Sunday before the first full week of classes; the glee of Mountain Day, the never-ending agony of midterm season; and let’s not even talk about finals. The phases of Smith College life repeat in a lather, rinse and repeat cycle. The constant reminder to take care of ourselves “in these times” or to address our concerns in a funded project echoes in the background. Yet, “in these times,” the Sophian wants to encourage and challenge all students to share their perspectives with us. In light of the July 31 incident, the Sophian reaffirms its commitment in valuing students’ voices. This year, you may notice some new changes: a Smith-related history comic strip, a recurring study abroad column and the introduction of writing teams. We are an independent student press, and we ask you – the student body — to continue sharing your stories with us — even if it’s just for a week.
