On Thursday, November 30, 2017, President McCartney announced to the Smith community the appointment of the new Vice President for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity: David T. Campbell Bradley. Carreon Bradley previously worked at Vassar College as the chair of the Committee of Inclusion and Equity and as an associate professor in the physics department. The appointment will be effective January 18th 2018.
Carreon Bradley was a first-generation college graduate and has dedicated his career to assisting students and promoting diversity and inclusion as crucial aspects on college campuses. He earned a degree from Grinnell College with a B.A. physics and gender and women’s studies as well as a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
A search committee made up of various trustee members, faculty, and students assisted in the selection of Carreon Bradley after Dwight Hamilton left the position at the conclusion of the spring term last year. The search committee included: chair Katherine Rowe; Neelum Amin ’86, trustee; Floyd Cheung; Larry Hunt; Natalie James ’18; Nnamdi Pole; Danielle Ramdath; Laura Rauscher; and Mona Sinha ‘88, trustee.
While at Vassar, David T. Carreon Bradley was influential in the implementation of many programs that helped to promote diversity and inclusion on campus. One of these programs was the inclusion of a social justice program into the curriculum. In recent years, there have been calls from Smith faculty and students to include a similar required program into Smith’s curriculum. The committee also worked to revise the college’s mission statement to be more reflective of its students and emphasize diversity and inclusion. Carreon Bradley has also placed specific emphasis on STEM projects and ensuring inclusive opportunities for students.
In 2015, the committee was awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s first Cooke Prize for Equity in Education Excellence. Carreon Bradley is also a lifetime member of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Natives Americans in Science as well as a member of the Acoustical Society of America and the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education.
The news of David T. Carreon Bradley’s appointment has been extremely positive, and students expressed the hope for changes to come to campus in light of this addition to the Smith community.
